Do You Fear Rejection or Abandonment in Your Relationship?
Do you constantly worry that your partner will leave, reject you or lose interest in you? Fear of abandonment in relationships can feel overwhelming, especially when a small change in your partner's behaviour triggers anxiety, overthinking or a need for reassurance.
Sometimes, these fears have deeper roots in childhood trauma and relationships.
If you experienced emotional neglect, rejection, inconsistency, criticism, conflict or unstable caregiving as a child, you may have learned that love wasn't always safe or predictable..
You may have developed beliefs such as:
“People I love will leave me.” “I have to be good enough to be loved.” “If someone is upset, I've done something wrong.”
These beliefs can continue into adult relationships, even when your current partner hasn't actually done anything wrong.
How fear of abandonment can show up
You might find yourself:
Overthinking your partner's behaviour
Needing frequent reassurance
Becoming anxious when they need space
People-pleasing to avoid conflict
Fearing rejection after disagreements
Becoming emotionally overwhelmed or withdrawing
These aren't character flaws. They can be protective coping skills developed earlier in life.
How can you overcome the fear?
Start by noticing your triggers and asking yourself:
“Is this about what is happening now, or is something from my past being activated?”
Learning to regulate your nervous system, challenge old beliefs and understand your emotional patterns can help.
If these patterns continue to affect your relationships, deeper trauma-informed counselling can help you understand and heal the underlying wounds.
You don't have to keep repeating the pattern
At Rebuild Together Counselling, I provide warm, trauma-informed counselling for childhood trauma, attachment difficulties, relationship anxiety and people-pleasing.
Using approaches including IFS, parts work, CBT and person-centred counselling, we can gently explore where these patterns began and help you develop greater self-trust and emotional security.
